Round Brilliant: The Market Benchmark

The round brilliant remains the world’s most popular diamond shape, consistently accounting for 50–60% of global retail diamond sales. Its 57-facet arrangement maximises light return and fire, and GIA’s standardised cut grading system means quality is reliably quantifiable and comparable. For wholesale buyers, round brilliants offer the deepest liquidity — they are the easiest shape to sell across all markets.

The round brilliant commands a 20–35% premium over fancy shapes of equivalent 4C grade due to higher rough waste during cutting (typically 40–50% of rough weight is lost vs 20–30% for fancy shapes). Buyers should factor this into parcel pricing comparisons.

Oval: The Fastest-Growing Fancy Shape

Oval diamonds have seen the sharpest demand increase of any shape since 2019, driven by bridal trends in the US and UK. Their elongated silhouette makes them appear larger per carat than rounds of equivalent weight — an oval of 1.00 ct faces up comparably to a round of approximately 1.10–1.15 ct. This perceived size advantage makes ovals exceptionally appealing to consumer value-seekers.

The primary quality concern for ovals is the “bow-tie” effect — a dark, bow-tie-shaped shadow visible across the centre of poorly proportioned stones. Strong bow-ties significantly reduce a stone’s desirability. Rachna Export selects ovals using Sarine optical symmetry analysis to screen out strong bow-ties before parcel assembly.

Cushion, Emerald, and Princess: The Retailer Favourites

Cushion cuts — pillow-shaped with rounded corners and large facets — are the second most popular shape globally and particularly dominant in vintage and antique-inspired jewellery. Cushion brilliants (many small facets) versus cushion modified brilliants (fewer larger facets with chunky light patterns) behave very differently optically; buyers should specify which they require.

Emerald cuts are step-cut rectangles that emphasise clarity and colour over brilliance. Their large, open table makes inclusions and colour tints visible at a glance; buyers should insist on VS1 or better clarity and G or better colour for emerald cuts in the US bridal market. Emerald cuts are currently enjoying a strong trend moment in fine jewellery.

Princess cuts (square brilliant) were dominant in the 2000s and retain significant wholesale volume. They cut efficiently from octahedral rough, producing less waste than rounds. However, their sharp corners require protective prong settings and are prone to chipping — a consideration for retail partners who set their own stones.

Pear, Marquise, and Heart: The Statement Shapes

Pear-shaped diamonds (teardrop) are experiencing a notable resurgence, driven by celebrity engagements and social media trend cycles. Like ovals, they face up large per carat. Quality challenges include symmetry (the two shoulders must be mirror-image) and bow-tie management. Rachna Export sources pears with strict symmetry specifications on request.

Marquise diamonds are elongated with pointed ends, maximising finger coverage in rings. They are the least popular shape in current markets but maintain steady demand in certain Gulf and Asian markets for large-statement pieces. Heart-shaped diamonds are niche, sentiment-driven goods — they move in the fashion and gifting segments rather than bridal.

Sourcing Mixed-Shape Parcels from Rachna Export

Rachna Export assembles mixed and matched parcels across all ten major shapes. For buyers running multiple retail SKUs, we offer calibrated parcels — stones within a tight size window sorted by shape — allowing consistent setting production without stone-by-stone adjustment.

All fancy shapes are assessed for optical symmetry, bow-tie strength (where applicable), and length-to-width ratio before parcel inclusion. Contact our sales team with your shape, size, and 4C specification to receive a same-week parcel offer.
