What Causes the Bow-Tie Effect?
The bow-tie effect is a dark, bow-tie-shaped shadow that appears across the center of elongated diamond cuts, most notably Ovals, Pears, and Marquises. It is not an inclusion, but rather an optical phenomenon caused by light leakage.
When a diamond is cut with an elongated shape, the facets in the center are shorter and steeper than those at the ends. When you look at the diamond, your head and body block light from entering those specific center facets, creating a dark reflection.
Assessing Severity: When is a Bow-Tie a Problem?
A slight bow-tie is almost inevitable in well-cut elongated shapes and can actually provide appealing contrast that highlights the stone's brilliance. However, a severe, stark black bow-tie is considered a significant negative that diminishes the diamond's beauty and value.
Because grading laboratories like the GIA do not assign an overall 'Cut' grade to fancy shapes (only Polish and Symmetry), buyers cannot rely on a certificate to warn them of a severe bow-tie. Visual inspection—either in person or via high-resolution 360-degree video—is mandatory.

To minimize the bow-tie effect, manufacturers must carefully balance the length-to-width ratio, depth percentage, and table size. Overly shallow or overly deep stones typically exhibit the most prominent shadows.
