Microscopic Distinctions
VVS (Very Very Slightly Included) diamonds contain minute inclusions that are extremely difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification. The distinction between VVS1 and VVS2 is largely based on the location and visibility of these inclusions.
In a VVS1 diamond, the inclusions (often tiny pinpoints) are typically only visible from the pavilion (the bottom of the stone) or are exceptionally faint from the top. In a VVS2 diamond, the inclusions might be slightly larger or located nearer to the center of the table (top), but they remain invisible to the naked eye.
For the end consumer, there is absolutely no visual difference between a VVS1 and VVS2 diamond once set in jewelry. Both offer pristine, flawless face-up appearance.
The Wholesale Price Gap
Despite the lack of visual difference, the wholesale price gap between VVS1 and VVS2 is notable, driven purely by rarity. As you move up the carat weight scale, this percentage gap widens significantly.
For retail jewelers, VVS2 represents a 'sweet spot' for clients demanding ultra-high clarity without paying the premium associated with VVS1 or Internally Flawless (IF) grades. Stocking VVS2 allows retailers to offer highly competitive pricing while maintaining excellent margins.
